Liminal is a collection of spaces that have drawn me in — places where openness, depth, and quiet exist in perfect balance. From vast galleries to airy courtyards and expansive interiors, these photographs capture the way light, structure, and emptiness interact. Each space carries a distinct presence, yet all evoke that same fleeting sense of transition. I’ve taken these photos in different locations, each one offering a moment of stillness and perspective that I want to share.
Flying Umbrellas - On a sunny afternoon in the summer of 2022, while exploring downtown Concord, MA in search of a lunch spot, I stumbled upon a hidden alleyway filled with color and movement. Suspended above, a vibrant installation of umbrellas appeared to lift into the sky, casting playful shadows over the walkway below. Lined with tables for visitors to sit, relax, and enjoy a moment of rest, the space felt both inviting and whimsical. The floating umbrellas transformed the alley into something more than just a passage—it became a fleeting, open-air escape filled with light, color, and a sense of wonder.
Going Up Taken on a quiet morning in 2019, this image captures a moment just after stepping off the Metro in Washington, D.C. My son and I were in the city for a comic book convention—an event filled with creativity and storytelling, two things he loves. Beyond the convention, we also spent time visiting galleries along the National Mall, where open spaces and light-filled architecture created a sense of expansiveness. Perhaps it was that same sense of openness that caught my eye here—an escalator ascending toward a bright, unseen space, mirroring the feeling of stepping into something new.
Lantern Parade During the same trip to Washington, D.C. in the spring of 2019, while walking along 11th Street, I came across a striking display of pink lanterns suspended above a wide alley. Connecting two streets and lined with side entrances to local businesses, the alley became more than just a passage—it was transformed into a glowing, vibrant space. The lanterns created a canopy of color, casting soft light below and inviting passersby to pause, look up, and take in the playful atmosphere of the moment.
Falling / North by Northwest While visiting the North Carolina Museum of Art on New Year’s Eve, I came across this striking installation—a figure suspended in mid-fall, evoking a moment of tension and movement. The piece was inspired by North by Northwest, one of my favorite Hitchcock films, and immediately drew me in. Looking up, the figure seemed to hover between ceiling and floor, emphasizing the vast openness of the space. The installation not only captured the feeling of falling but also highlighted the depth and transition within the gallery itself, turning the architecture into part of the experience.
The Breakers During a visit to Newport, Rhode Island in the summer of 2022, we toured the grand mansions that line the coast, stepping into spaces filled with history and opulence. At The Breakers, I stepped onto a second-story loggia, where arched openings framed the green lawn and the blue sky and water beyond. Inside, the mansion’s ornate interiors felt dim and weighty, while this open-air space offered a striking contrast—structure meeting light, grandeur giving way to the vastness of nature.
Lava Tunnel Light During a visit to Hilo, Hawaii in the summer of 2018, we explored a lava tunnel—its passage carved by molten rock, now a smooth, darkened chamber frozen in time. The deeper we walked, the more the black volcanic walls enveloped us, the path ahead disappearing into shadows. Unable to venture further into the darkness, we turned back, and in that moment, the tunnel’s entrance radiated with the brilliance of the outside world. A glowing sphere of natural light framed the exit, illuminating the way out and casting long, golden reflections onto the stone—an ethereal contrast between the cooled remains of fire and the warmth of the sun beyond.
Cade Winery In the summer of 2019, we visited Cade Estate Winery, perched at 1,850 feet on Howell Mountain, where the air was crisp and cool. As we walked through the space, we entered the area where wine is made and stored—a strikingly modern structure of gray steel and concrete. The clean, geometric lines of the architecture created a sense of precision and stillness, but at its center, a circular opening in the ceiling transformed the space. Sunlight poured through, casting a soft glow against the cool surfaces, creating a delicate balance between warmth and air, structure and openness, depth and light.
The Catacombs Taken on an afternoon while exploring Salzburg, Austria, this image captures the ascent through the catacombs carved into the cliffs above the city. The worn stone steps, framed by rough-hewn walls, lead upward toward an open doorway, where daylight spills into the passage. Walking through, I was struck by the contrast—the enclosed, ancient corridors giving way to light, space, and the world beyond.
